Palisaid is an early stage Medtech start-up
focused on building an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) integrated tool that helps capture insurance reimbursement and data easier for diabetes education programs. Founded in response to highly ineffective processes commonly found in diabetes education programs, and growing population health trends Currently in early stage product development that will be built to an integration with the world’s largest EMR provider.
Question:
Does the current state of a clinic/health systems diabetes education program show opportunities for Palisaid's technology concept to help provide value in patient outcomes and reimbursement?
Solutions:
A cloud-based HIPPA compliant electronic medical record (EMR) system app that helps diabetes education programs maximize reimbursement, and manage essential activities in one connected experience
Problems:
Manual processes that are time consuming
Missing billable opportunities
Access & scheduling issues
Patient information not easily accessible
There are 2 of us in the design team, together we broke down the idea and created the Concept mapping.
Concept Mapping
As we were designing the educator screen we broke down what information regarding the patient an educator may need during their visit to have all of the necessary information to conduct a proper appointment.
Through research first person, and interviewing with diabetes educators:
Patient Information
Group
Medical History
Prescription hisotry
Charting
Summary
Program Manager
While designing for the program manager, I wanted to create some core features that assist them in the daily work:
The Ability to assign new patients to educators
Get an overview of each educator
workload, # of patients per day, basic educator information
Be able to see patient information
New, Returning, Telehealth Visit, Group
The Ability to see multiple clinics
(If they manage more than one)
Patient Summary
When I first conceptualized the patient summary screen my idea was for the educator to be able to have an over view of the patient prior to their appointment.
My goal was to be able to have the most import information that would assist the educator with preparing for each patient. Giving them a “snap shot of health.”
So I started with basic information:
Device currently using
Weight and height
A1C
BMI
Medications (diabetes related or not)
Other conditions
Referring doctor
User interviews
We had the opportunity to sit down with a couple Diabetes Educators to discuss our ideas and directions to gain valuable feedback.
As went through the educator screen we learned that these were more program manager tasks.
During the conversation we discussed what their day was like, step by step:
Charting-individual and group appointments
time consuming, not always finished during the visit
Rescheduling
usually done during the appointment
Preparing for each appointment
no central source of informtion
I was able to show my concept behind the patient summary. They imagined it to be more expansive. They expressed how they would like to be able to see patient trends. This would be a great tool for preparing for appointments.

Post User interview
I decided the educator screen needed a fresh start. I kept the calendar because I felt that was vital, I also incorporated some “tasks” as they mentioned not everything is done during each appointment.
As the patient summary continued to grow I had an idea to use the blank space of the educator screen to house this information.
As the educator page and patient summary were coming together we had a funny thought, “A timeline would truly give them a snap shot of the appointment.”
I created a basic time line and added places holders for what will be specific points of information.
Appointments
Lab values
RX
Vitals
Group
While creating the functionality of the time line I decided that I would incorporate a away to see past information and trends within the time line itself.
The educator screen has become the Mecca of information from the “snap shot health” to more detailed information broken down into different sections.
Summary
Timeline
Rx History
Medical History
etc.
Time line Layover
We have gained a few new UI Eng. since I have begun this process so I wanted to have the new additions, plus everyone else to do some internal testing. I gave everyone a task list and asked them to fill out my user survey.
Overall feedback I got back is the colors may start to get to be to much with close proximity. We also thought about any ADA standards. Consistence between pages, and good use of space.
The “Home” screen with the task bar incorporated with a pop out function.
The new calendar function combines the 2 pages into 1.
I change the layout of the page to have a better use of the space. I changed the colors out for icons.
If your still with me there are two side projects I did while. was waiting for internal feedback.
